Moving to a new country is never easy. Restarting a high-stakes career, in a new language, within an environment where every decision can mean the difference between life and death, can feel almost impossible. Yet for Grant Whiteside, Volunteer Search and Rescue (SAR) drone operator, purpose, and a commitment to helping others proved stronger than any border.
In a powerful mini-documentary produced by Emhance International Responder Development, and hosted by Robin van Bruggen, we follow Grant’s journey from the UK to Germany, where he and his wife began a new chapter of their lives. What unfolds is not just a story about drones or technology—but about resilience, community, and the universal language of rescue.
Starting Again in a New Country
After moving from the UK to Germany, Grant faced challenges familiar to many who relocate internationally - but amplified by the realities of volunteer emergency response. Integrating into a German SAR team meant adapting to a new culture, new operational procedures, and a new language, all while maintaining the professionalism and precision that search and rescue demands.

Despite these hurdles, Grant found that the core values of SAR transcend nationality. Whether in the UK or Germany, responders share the same mission: bring people home. That shared purpose created an instant bond with fellow volunteers and allowed Grant to contribute meaningfully, even while navigating language barriers.
Bridging the Gap with Drone Technology
One of the most striking elements of Grant’s work is how he uses drone technology - particularly thermal imaging - to bridge communication gaps in the field. In high-pressure situations, data matters more than words. A thermal signature, a live aerial view, or a precisely mapped search area can instantly convey critical information to a multi-national team.
This is where Grant’s expertise truly shines. His deep operational understanding of drone-enabled SAR has not only supported real-world missions, but also helped shape the tools he relies on.

As a DroneControl brand ambassador, Grant works closely with our team, providing practical, frontline feedback that directly influences how our technology evolves. His insights help us refine live streaming, thermal workflows, and incident response features—ensuring that what we build genuinely supports responders when it matters most.
At DroneControl, this type of collaboration is invaluable. Grant represents exactly why we build what we build: for the people in the field, operating under pressure, often as volunteers, giving their time, expertise, and personal resources to save lives.
The Reality of Volunteer Search and Rescue
Grant’s story also highlights a reality that often goes unseen. SAR volunteers across the world invest vast amounts of time, training, and personal money simply to be ready when the call comes. Many teams - both volunteer and governmental - are underfunded and under-resourced, yet continue to operate out of pure commitment to their communities.

Support from organisations, educators, and technology partners makes a tangible difference. Through advocacy, education, and storytelling, Emhance International Responder Development shines a light on these realities and helps strengthen the global SAR community.
A Shared Mission, A Global Community
Grant’s journey reminds us that rescue has no borders. While languages, procedures, and cultures may differ, the mission remains universal. Technology - when designed with real operators in mind - can become a powerful equaliser, enabling teams to work together seamlessly in the most challenging environments.
We are incredibly proud to support Grant, and grateful for the trust and feedback he continues to give as a DroneControl ambassador. Our thanks also go to Robin and the entire team at Emhance for producing such a thoughtful and human story, and for highlighting the dedication of SAR volunteers worldwide.
To Grant - and to all SAR volunteers around the world - thank you for what you do.
